The Benefits of Using St. Augustine, Bermuda, Zoysia, or Palmetto Sod to Replace Grass

Are you considering replacing your lawn with new sod this spring?

Choosing St. Augustine, Bermuda, Zoysia Palisades, or Palmetto® sod is an excellent decision!

These grass types are ideal for our Texas climate, thriving in the heat and withstanding brief droughts. They’re also low-maintenance, with a lush, green appearance all year round.

While planting fresh sod can be time-consuming, requiring proper soil preparation and careful watering for the first few weeks, the end result is well worth the effort.

Once established, your beautiful lawn will be the envy of all your neighbors. Invest in quality sod and enjoy your beautiful new yard!

Here are the answers to the five frequently asked questions about Palmetto® St. Augustine Grass for homeowners and landscapers in the Houston, Texas area:

  1. What are the ideal growing conditions for St. Augustine Grass in Houston, Texas?

St Augustine Grass thrives in warm, humid climates and prefers well-drained soils that are moderately fertile. It requires a pH between 5.5 and 7.5, which is slightly acidic to neutral. It can tolerate some shade, but it grows best in areas that receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  1. How do I install grass and what is the best time to do it in Houston, Texas?

Grass is typically installed as sod pieces or rolls of grass that have been grown and cut in a field. The best time to install sod grass in Houston, Texas is during the spring or fall when temperatures are moderate and there is adequate rainfall. Before installing, prepare the soil by removing any weeds and rocks and adding any necessary amendments. Make sure the soil is moist but not saturated, then lay the sod tightly together, like a puzzle, ensuring the edges are pressed together. Water the sod thoroughly after installation.

  1. How often should I water grass after installing it in Spring and The Woodlands Texas?

After installing grass, it is important to keep it well-watered to help it establish roots in the soil. Water the grass every day for the first two weeks, and then gradually reduce watering frequency to every other day for the next two weeks. After the first month, you can water the grass once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions. Make sure to water deeply, so that the water penetrates the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches.

  1. How often should I fertilize grass and what type of fertilizer should I use?

Grass should be fertilized regularly to maintain its health and vigor. In North Houston, it is recommended to fertilize grass three times per year: in early spring, late spring, and early fall. Use a slow-release, balanced fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Follow the application instructions on the fertilizer bag, and make sure to water the grass immediately after fertilizing to help the fertilizer soak into the soil.

  1. How much sunlight does Palmetto® St. Augustine Grass need, and how much shade is too much for this type of grass in Houston TX?

Palmetto® St. Augustine Grass requires at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive. It can tolerate some shade, but too much shade can cause the grass to thin out and become more susceptible to disease and insect damage. If your lawn receives less than 4 hours of direct sunlight per day, consider planting a more shade-tolerant grass variety or replacing the grass with shade-loving plants. If you have no other option than to grow Palmetto® St. Augustine Grass in a shaded area, make sure to keep the grass healthy with proper watering, fertilization, and mowing practices to help it withstand the challenging growing conditions
