Why Getting Fresh Sod Matters

Let’s talk about why fresh sod actually matters. Sod is living. It’s not just a product. It’s thousands of grass plants. Once it’s cut at the farm, it starts to deteriorate. Fast. Especially in our Texas heat.

Old sod turns yellow. Roots dry out. Recovery time doubles or triples. That’s why we get fresh shipments constantly. Our St. Augustine comes from nearby farms. It’s not sitting on trucks for days getting cooked.

One contractor told us he tried saving money buying from a big box store. The sod was already yellow when he got it. Half of it died within a week. Customer was furious. Had to replace the whole lawn. Ended up costing three times what it should have.

When to Install Sod in Our Area

You can install sod year-round in Spring and Houston area. That’s one of the benefits of our climate. But there are better times.

Best time? Early spring or fall. Temperatures are moderate. Grass establishes before extreme temps hit.

Summer installations work fine but require more water. A lot more water. Like 2-3 times daily watering for the first couple weeks. People underestimate this. Then they call us wondering why their new lawn is crispy. Water, water, water.

Winter installations are slower to establish but still work. The grass goes dormant but the roots can still develop slowly.

How Much Sod Do You Need?

This trips people up constantly. They guess. Guessing is expensive.

One piece of our sod is 16″ x 24″. That’s about 2.67 square feet.

A full pallet covers about 450 square feet. That’s approximately 165 pieces.

To figure out how much you need:

  1. Measure length x width of your area in feet
  2. Multiply them together to get square feet
  3. Divide by 2.67 to get the number of pieces
  4. Or divide by 450 to get the number of pallets

Add 5-10% for waste, cuts around edges, etc. Better to have a bit extra than not enough.

Common Mistakes People Make With Sod

I’ve seen every sod mistake possible. Here are the big ones:

Not prepping the ground properly. Throwing new sod on top of old dead grass or weeds doesn’t work. You need to remove the old stuff. Level the ground. Add topsoil if needed.

Wrong grass for the location. Putting St. Augustine in full blazing sun with no irrigation? Gonna struggle. Putting Bermuda in heavy shade? Waste of money. St. Augustine handles shade much better.

Not watering enough after installation. New sod needs tons of water. For the first two weeks, water 2-3 times daily, 10-15 minutes each time. After that, deep watering 3 times weekly for another few weeks.

Cutting corners on soil. Our soil in The Woodlands and Spring area is often heavy clay. Sometimes you need to add topsoil or garden mix to give the grass a fighting chance. We sell that too.

Mowing too soon or too short. Wait 2-3 weeks before the first mow. Then never cut more than 1/3 of the grass height at once. St. Augustine should be kept at 3-4 inches tall.

What We Offer Beyond Just Sod

Yeah, we sell grass. But we’ve got everything else you need too:

  • Topsoil and garden mix for ground prep
  • Fill dirt for low spots
  • Compost for soil amendment
  • Mulch for beds (black, brown, or red)
  • Decorative gravel and stones
  • Large rocks for landscaping features
  • Bull rock, crushed granite, limestone

We’re a one-stop shop. Some folks come in just for a yard of mulch. Others do complete landscape overhauls and get everything from us.

Why Local Matters for Sod

Ever wonder why some new lawns in The Woodlands or Spring look amazing while others fail? Often it’s about where the sod came from.

Local sod is already adapted to our specific climate and soil conditions. It’s already growing in similar conditions to your yard. The transition shock is minimized.

Grass grown in different regions can struggle here. Our humidity, our clay soils, our specific insects and diseases – they’re all factors.

The other big advantage? Time from farm to installation. The shorter this time, the better the sod establishes. Our St. Augustine is cut fresh and delivered fast. This matters more than most people realize.

What Happens If You Don't Install Sod Correctly

I’ve seen the aftermath of bad sod installations all over Spring and The Woodlands. It’s not pretty.

Patchy lawns that never fill in. Dead spots that keep coming back. Uneven surfaces that are impossible to mow properly. Drainage problems that lead to flooding.

Doing it right the first time is always cheaper than fixing it later. One builder in The Woodlands had to redo 12 lawns because they cut corners on soil prep. The sod looked okay for a month, then declined rapidly. All those unhappy homeowners. All that extra cost.
